Hi, I am Ms. Curry, I am the intervention specialist (special education teacher) for students in grades 5-8 at The International Academy of Columbus. I began teaching at IAC in the winter of the 2013-14 school year. Prior to that I worked as a private tutor, ABA therapist, and in-home provider for students with special needs. My experience working with a variety of people with special needs helps me be a more successful intervention teacher. In addition to teaching, I appreciate the arts and sports, which helps me differentiate for a variety of student needs and interests.
I graduated from Oberlin College in 1998 with a degree in Visual Art and Art History, and promptly got my first assistant teaching job at Marburn Academy, a school for children with learning disabilities. I gained much of my background knowledge of intervention while working there. After working as an aide at several other schools, I decided to go back to school to get a teaching license in special education. In 2013 I earned my Intervention Specialist license from Ashland University. I tried teaching at other schools, but decided that I like the structure, and environment at IAC better. I have found a home here and enjoy working as part of the IAC team, to serve the needs of the Islamic population in Columbus.
In addition to teaching I enjoy the arts, being physically active, and . In my spare time I practice photography and sculpture. I support the Actor's Theater, the Columbus Arts Festival, and Community Festival, where I volunteer to help with programs every year. I am athletic and enjoy whitewater kayaking, cross-country skiing, biking, hiking, and I captain an adult league ice hockey team. In the summer I enjoy camping, recreational boating, and spending time with my pet cat. A lover of art, music, and theater, I try to provide my students with a variety of options on how they want to demonstrate their learning using multisensory activities.
